Things To Do In London In September
As if it’s September already! September marks the transition from summer into autumn when the arrival of night becomes noticeably earlier and the capital’s temperature cools considerably. Here’s hoping, however, we hold on to this warm weather for a little longer and September heralds an Indian summer (we can dream)! Whether hazy days or cloudy horizons, whatever the weather, make the most of what London has to offer this month!
The Totally Thames festival takes place across the whole of the month of September. Bigger than ever, the festival celebrates the River Thames with a range of events, from art and literature to music and film. Whether riverside or on the water, visitors can enjoy races and regattas, such as the paddle boarding Thames River Relay. There’s also the opportunity to sample some of London’s best riverside restaurants for less with Dine by the River, the festival’s exclusive range of riverside dining experiences.
Veggies, beware… Founded in the US and brought to the UK by chef Richard H Turner, Meatopia is a unique festival, honouring high-quality, ethically sourced meat. Returning to London’s Tobacco Dock on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th September, meat-lovers can marvel at myriad meat-based dishes, cooked over wood and charcoal by some of the world’s top chefs. A carnivalesque weekend, crammed with meat, drink, fire and music, Meatopia UK has become a legendary event for food lovers. This year sees the first, over 18s, ‘Late Shift’ on Friday evening, featuring demonstrations from a range of renowned chefs, curated daily demos by craft brewers and live music from the likes of Professor Green.
This music, arts, and food festival returns to Blackheath for its third year on 10th and 11th September. Bigger and better than ever, boasting headliners Primal Scream and Belle & Sebastian, the music line-up also features Hot Chip and James. With some interesting musical diversions, such as St.Etienne and a DJ set, courtesy of Neneh Cherry, the festival’s sounds have something to suit everyone. A food village, showcasing professional chefs in action, means this festival is about much more than music. With a storytelling stage, craft activities and outdoor adventures, there’s plenty to keep the everyone entertained!
Returning on 11th September, the Hackney One carnival brings bright, noisy fun to the borough’s streets. This East London extravaganza showcases spectacular costumes, energetic dance, sound systems and live music from around the world. Gillett Square will be transformed into an all-day play area, while Ridley Road will host the after-party, with reggae, soca and Brazilian music accompanying global cuisine and arts and crafts. This is right on East London’s doorstep, not to be missed!
From 15th to 18th September, the Tall Ships are back in London, cruising the east end of the River Thames. This is definitely a festival for the history buffs, as dozens of traditional, tall-mast sailing ships will take you back in time, allowing spectators to taste just how vital the Thames was as a trade route. Post festival party season, these stunning ships are a sight for sore eyes. Whether admiring the display bankside or climbing aboard, festival-goers can enjoy gigs, parades, and firework displays.
